[Exclusive] One Voice, 60,000 Fans: BTS and ARMY Turn London's Stadium Into a Chorus of 'Arirang'
"Arirang, arirang, arariyo."
At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, a sea of red rippled across the stands. Fans dressed in matching red outfits and accessories started a wave before the show even began, sending a crimson tide rolling around the venue.
BTS performed the London stop of its "BTS WORLD TOUR 'ARIRANG'" on July 6, local time. The group is set to hold two concerts at the stadium on July 6 and 7.
The 60,000-seat venue was nearly full. Some fans came with friends, while others arrived with partners or family. Mothers and daughters sat side by side in matching outfits.
As the sound of a gayageum, a traditional Korean string instrument, grew louder to signal the start of the show, fans rose to their feet almost in unison. The concert was scheduled for 7 p.m., but a torch-carrying dancer stepped onto the stage at 7:23 p.m.
The opener, "Hooligan," lifted the energy immediately. Fans screamed every time a member's face flashed across the giant screens. During the song's laugh-along hook, the entire stadium joined in, turning the moment into a shared inside joke. It was a reminder that the performance feels complete only when the crowd becomes part of it. One fan turned to her friend, screamed, then collapsed back into her seat, both of them flushed and grinning.
By "Run BTS," the heat inside the stadium had overtaken the summer air outside. Fans rocked in place as the pre-chorus built, then jumped in unison when the drop hit, causing the floor beneath them to tremble. The run from "FYA" into "FIRE" felt designed for exactly that kind of release. The members spread across the extended stage to get closer to the audience, and every time they jumped, the crowd jumped with them.
Near the end of "Merry Go Round," white confetti burst into the air. The evening breeze carried it across the open stadium, while purple lighting caught the fluttering pieces, making them look like pale violet petals drifting overhead. Fans reached up to catch them as they fell. To many, the confetti felt less like paper than a keepsake from the night.
With much of the setlist performed in English, singalongs came naturally for the international audience. The title track "SWIM," from the group's latest album "ARIRANG," drew one of the loudest responses, with fans singing along through nearly every line.
The Korean songs proved no different. During "Not Today," the crowd shouted the "chong jojun balsa" hook in perfect unison. "MIC DROP" was another highlight. Fans flawlessly chanted the members' full Korean names in order before the song began. Then came one of the night's biggest singalong moments as the stadium roared back SUGA's rap line, "mianhae eomma" ("I'm sorry, Mom"). Any language barrier seemed to disappear through the music.
"Body to Body" was the moment that best captured the identity of the "ARIRANG" tour. Just before the traditional folk melody woven into the song began, the members turned their microphones toward the audience. ARMY from dozens of countries sang "Arirang" together in one voice.
Midway through the show, the giant screens turned to the audience, highlighting handmade signs and carefully planned outfits. Fans pulled out props they had clearly spent time preparing. Two friends from different countries held up a notebook explaining how BTS had brought them together. Another fan waved a homemade version of her national flag featuring her favorite member's face. The stadium filled with cheers and laughter as fans shared their own stories in their own ways.
One striking detail was the mix of K-POP lightsticks throughout the crowd. It looked noticeably different from a concert in Korea. While most fans carried ARMY Bombs, BTS's official lightstick, many also waved lightsticks from groups such as IZ*ONE and Loossemble. It was a small reminder that supporting one group often opens the door to discovering another, and eventually to K-pop as a whole.
BTS kicked off the European leg of its tour in Madrid on June 26. After wrapping up its London concerts on July 7, the group will head to Munich on July 11 and 12 before continuing to Paris on July 17 and 18.
