Yoo Ah-in Makes First Public Appearance at 'Hope' VIP Screening After Suspended Sentence
Actor Yoo Ah-in made his first public appearance at a film event since his suspended sentence for repeated illegal drug use was finalized, drawing fresh attention to a possible return to the industry.
On July 14, photos and videos from the VIP screening of the film "Hope" spread across online communities and social media. The event was held the previous evening at Megabox COEX in Seoul's Gangnam district.
In footage from the venue, Yoo Ah-in arrived in a black shirt and pants with a cap pulled low over his face. He skipped the press photo wall, but was seen inside the venue exchanging warm greetings and hugs with acquaintances. In one clip, he smiled broadly at a friend and said, "It's been a while."
The appearance stood out because it was his first time attending a public film event since the Supreme Court finalized his suspended sentence. Onlookers also said he was seen with director Jang Jae-hyun at the venue. Earlier reports suggested Yoo Ah-in was considering a role in the director's next project, "Vampir: Heir of Blood" (Baempireu), but distributor NEW said, "Nothing has been confirmed."
Reaction online was split once news of his attendance spread. Some users pushed back, writing, "Is he already easing back in?" and "Isn't this too easy of a return?" Others were more forgiving, saying his acting talent was too valuable to lose and that they wanted to see him in a strong new project.
Yoo Ah-in was indicted on charges of repeatedly using medical narcotics, including propofol, over roughly 18 months starting in September 2020, and of illegally obtaining sleeping pills under other people's names. A lower court sentenced him to one year in prison and he was taken into custody in the courtroom. On appeal, the sentence was reduced to one year with two years of probation. The Supreme Court later upheld that ruling, and he was released after about five months behind bars.
Yoo Ah-in recently ended his exclusive contract with his longtime agency, UAA. The industry has continued to float talk of his next project and possible signing with a new agency, but no official return has been confirmed.
