How Paris Welcomes BTS: Quiet Streets, Burning Hearts
K-POP group BTS brought its world tour to Paris this week, and while the city felt quieter than other tour stops, the fandom itself was anything but. A single night of the show pulled 92,000 people into one venue.
On the 17th at 7:30 p.m., BTS opened the Paris leg of "BTS World Tour ARIRANG" at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, just outside Paris. A second show is set for the 18th at 8 p.m.
Unlike London, where the city itself seemed to turn into a BTS campaign, Paris looked relatively calm. In other cities, large media facades would typically display tour visuals across building fronts, but in Paris, there were none. This is likely tied to local rules that protect the city's 19th-century architecture and limit decoration on building exteriors. Saint-Denis, which sits outside Paris, did allow a handful of outdoor tour ads.
The fandom filled in the rest. Fans carried handmade merch in and out of the stadium and gave it away to strangers for free. Inside the fandom, these giveaways are called "freebies," and the exchange started right at the stadium entrance. Fans struck up conversations with people they had never met, just to hand something over. One male fan gave a hand-knitted piece of merch to a K-POPIT reporter and said, "I really love making things, and it feels good to share them with other fans like this."
Even in heavy heat, groups of fans clustered together, laughing and swapping stories before doors opened. Asked about the French fandom, one fan said with confidence, "France has the biggest fandom in Europe." He then pointed to the show itself. "You can tell from the fact that they built a full 360-degree stage at Stade de France," he said. "Even a pop star like The Weeknd didn't do that here."
French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron were also spotted at the venue, drawing a wave of attention. Brigitte Macron is known to be a fan of the group, and previously invited BTS member j-hope to a large charity event she hosted. Photos and clips of the couple attending the concert spread quickly on X and other social platforms.
With 92,000 fans in the stadium on the 17th, BTS set a new record for the highest attendance the group has ever drawn to a single show. In a city that keeps its streets clear of tour ads, the number tells the story on its own.
