Two of South Korea's most recognizable actors, Kim Soo-hyun and Yoo Ah-in, are being talked about as possible returns to the screen. The paths in front of them look nothing alike. Kim is rebuilding trust after police found that key evidence behind an underage-dating allegation was fabricated. Yoo faces a different question entirely, following a finalized guilty verdict on drug charges.

Kim moved first. Last year, he stepped away from work after allegations surfaced that he had dated the late Kim Sae-ron while she was a minor.

Police later concluded that the KakaoTalk messages and audio file presented as proof had been fabricated. The chat logs were edited to make it look as if Kim was the other party in the conversation. The voice file, presented as the late actress speaking, was found to have been generated using AI. In June, Kim's agency released the official notice of the investigation's findings in the related complaints.

Once the police findings became public, Kim began stepping back into the spotlight. On the 15th, after about one year and four months away, his social media returned with an update and photos from an ad shoot for the Philippine clothing brand Bench. The same day, reports said roughly 40 project offers had been sent his way, driving new interest in what his next role might be.

None of those offers are locked in. They remain in early talks. For now, Kim has only resumed social media posts and commercial work. His official return as an actor will depend on which project he picks next and whether his already-filmed work makes it to release.

Yoo's situation is a different case. He was indicted on charges that included habitual use of medical narcotics such as propofol. A lower court sentenced him to one year in prison and ordered him taken into custody in the courtroom. On appeal, the sentence was reduced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, and he was released. The Supreme Court later upheld that appeals ruling.

In June, news broke that Yoo's contract with his former agency, UAA, had ended. Reports followed that he was in talks with Galaxy Corporation on an exclusive deal, though a signed contract has not been confirmed.

Talk of Yoo joining director Jang Jae-hyun's new film "Vampire" has also resurfaced. Distributor NEW says nothing has been confirmed. On the 13th, Yoo attended the VIP premiere for the film "Hope," his first public film event since the Supreme Court ruling. Photos of him at the event with Jang put the casting rumor back into circulation.

Both actors have strong name recognition and a reputation as skilled performers, but that does not automatically translate into public acceptance. Most people in the industry agree the standard for judging their returns cannot be the same.

For Kim, police findings that the core evidence behind the underage-dating allegation was fabricated have cleared him of the specific controversy that pushed him off screen. What remains is the harder work: repairing an image battered by more than a year of scrutiny, and easing the risk that brands and productions still see when they look at him.

Another key factor is whether Disney+ will release "Knock-Off," which Kim has already finished filming. New projects take a long time to make and premiere, so "Knock-Off" could end up being his real comeback vehicle if it airs. How the platform handles the release, and how viewers respond, will shape what comes next for him.

Yoo's case is different. He has a finalized guilty verdict for breaking the law. The legal process is over, but a return to acting is a separate matter. What Yoo needs is not just another chance to prove his craft. He has to show, first, how he takes responsibility for what he did, and whether he has gone through a period of restraint that the public can accept. His choice of projects and his conduct at public events also need more care than before.

Kim's task is to restore the trust damaged by controversy and to steady the uncertainty around his projects. Yoo's task, after a finalized conviction, is to face the public's judgment again with a sense of accountability.

Industry interest alone does not guarantee a successful return. In the end, Kim will need a project that confirms the trust he is trying to rebuild. Yoo will need to answer for what he owes before any comeback can begin. Their names came up around the same time, but they are starting from very different places.
