Director Yoon Jong-ho is back with his first project since the 2024 hit "Lovely Runner." His new drama, "Killer Housewife," premieres on MBC later this month.

The Friday-Saturday series follows a working mother with a deadly job as she tries to balance her career and her family. It debuts on the 31st at 9:50 p.m. KST. Gong Hyo-jin stars, reuniting with Yoon after his breakout success with "Lovely Runner."

Yoon said the biggest appeal of the show is how it grounds an unusual premise in feelings any viewer can relate to.

"Being a killer is far from ordinary, but trying to balance work and family is something a lot of people today are living through," he said.

He said he focused on the characters' emotions and choices rather than shock value. "Instead of leaning into the act of shooting people or killing as something sensational, I wanted to focus on the choices these characters make and the emotions they go through, even inside such an extreme setup," Yoon said.

"In the end, I think 'Killer Housewife' isn't really a story about a killer. It's the story of one person fighting to protect her life and her family," he added. "I directed it hoping viewers would connect first with the universal feelings inside the story, not just the unusual premise."

The cast is a key part of making that premise land. Yoon said he trusted his lead actors to bring each character to life.

"I was sure Gong Hyo-jin was the only actor who could naturally connect the real, everyday feel of a working mom with the very unusual setup of being a killer," he said.

He praised Jung Jun-won for having "the ability to make you believe a character's emotions and situation without needing much explanation." Of Lee Sang-yi, Yoon said, "He carries seriousness and humor at the same time, and he gave balance to a character that could easily tip too far one way." He also praised Sung Dong-il, saying, "Just his presence is enough to complete a character's story."

Yoon described "Killer Housewife" as "a drama that tells the most ordinary emotions through the most unusual setup." He named family love, romance, and balance as the show's core themes. "It's a growth story about someone who has lived a lonely life finding love and family, and slowly finding meaning and balance again," he said.

Yoon said he hopes the show lands as something warm. "I wanted a drama that doesn't lose sight of human warmth and the value of the people around us, even inside the laughs and the fun," he said. "If viewers can relax, laugh, and enjoy it, and finish with even a small thought like, 'I should be a little kinder to the people next to me,' I'd want nothing more."

"Killer Housewife," based on the Kakao Webtoon of the same name, premieres on the 31st at 9:50 p.m. KST.
