NCT 127's 10th Anniversary Comeback Comes With One Big Challenge
NCT 127 is set to return on Aug. 24 with its seventh full-length album, "BLINGY," marking the group's first comeback since renewing contracts with SM Entertainment and its first album celebrating its 10th anniversary.
But this comeback also comes with a new reality. Following Mark's departure earlier this year, NCT 127 is now a seven-member group. With Doyoung and Jungwoo currently serving in the military, promotions for "BLINGY" and the upcoming "NEO CITY – THE REDLINE" tour will be carried out by Johnny, Yuta, Taeyong, Jaehyun and Haechan. It will be the group's first major release as a five-member unit.
That raises one unavoidable question: How will NCT 127 evolve with a smaller lineup?
Doyoung has long been one of the group's defining vocalists, and his absence naturally shifts more responsibility to Haechan. Jaehyun is also expected to take on a larger vocal role, but fans are eager to see how the group will approach songs that once relied on Doyoung's powerful high notes and layered harmonies. At the same time, Taeyong's return restores one of NCT 127's strongest performance anchors, helping preserve the intensity and stage presence that have long defined the group.
The performances are likely to change as well. NCT 127 has built its reputation on large-scale choreography and intricate formations, and those routines will inevitably look different with five members instead of seven.
Yuta recently acknowledged the challenge on his Japanese radio show, "YUTA at Home," saying that practicing as five members has been "really difficult." Even so, he said the group is determined to show fans its best after such a long break.
The album itself suggests that NCT 127 is looking forward rather than back. According to SM Entertainment, the nine-track record reflects on the group's decade-long journey while expressing pride in its history and a commitment to continuing as "One Team." It positions "BLINGY" as both a celebration of the past and the beginning of a new chapter.
Rather than dwelling on the lineup change, fans have focused on what "BLINGY" represents. Taeyong and Jaehyun's return from military service has fueled anticipation, while the 10th anniversary teasers have been praised for capturing the group's unmistakable "Neo" identity. Even Johnny's decision to update his Instagram bio to simply "blingy" became another talking point as excitement surrounding the comeback continued to build.
There is still disappointment that Doyoung and Jungwoo won't be part of the comeback. Many fans have acknowledged that the group's vocal lineup will inevitably feel different, but the overall mood has remained supportive. Most see the five-member promotions as a temporary chapter while the two complete their military service, with hopes that the group will reunite as seven in a future release.
More than just another album, "BLINGY" will show how NCT 127 adapts to a different lineup while holding onto the sound and identity that have defined the group over the past decade. As the group celebrates its 10th anniversary, this comeback is less about starting over than proving it can continue evolving without losing what made NCT 127 unmistakably "Neo."
