Actor Nam Joo-hyuk is drawing attention for the quiet, precise work he does opposite characters who aren't really there. In the Netflix series "The East Palace," he plays a man who can see ghosts, and the performance is holding the show's fantasy world together.

"The East Palace" has been building an audience since its global release, and much of the conversation has centered on how the cast handles an occult fantasy setup that moves between the human world and the world of gwi, or ghosts. Nam Joo-hyuk, who plays Gu Cheon, has become the anchor of that world.

Gu Cheon sees ghosts and fights them. Because the character has to look at and react to things that aren't physically on set, the role leans heavily on the actor. Nam Joo-hyuk uses his eyes, his breathing, and small shifts in expression to show how Gu Cheon accepts the ghost world as part of his reality.

Nam Joo-hyuk has said he built his imagination over the years partly through game footage and similar visual references, and that habit shows up in his approach to these scenes. He plays Gu Cheon as someone who treats the overlap of the real and the unreal as normal, and that choice keeps the character grounded.

His work opposite the CG ghost creature Kkeomeoksari is another strong showcase. During filming, there was no physical actor across from him. He worked out where the creature would be and how it would move, then adjusted his eyeline and reactions so the relationship felt natural on screen.

The bond between Gu Cheon and Kkeomeoksari has become one of the show's most talked-about elements. Viewers have responded to the pairing since release, and the creature is being treated as more than a CG effect.

Nam Joo-hyuk's performance in "The East Palace" leans on restraint rather than big emotional beats. He carries the inner life of the character and the mood of the show through small, careful choices. Even in scenes built around invisible partners, his reactions read as real, which makes the show's world easier to buy into.

"The East Palace" started streaming worldwide on Netflix on the 17th.
