NEW YORK CITY, New York — For nearly two hours, CORTIS turned one of the first North American stops of their <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> Tour into an experience that felt far bigger than the venue holding it. Thousands of fans jumped, danced and screamed, but most importantly, they allowed themselves to simply get lost in the moment.

Bringing their first North American Tour to New York City on Thursday, August 6th, CORTIS delivered a show in which its greatest strength wasn’t an elaborate stage nor a carefully planned production but rather it focused on the relationship formed between all five members alongside the audience that was right in front of them.

CORTIS had previously explained that the long-term vision behind <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> was to establish a deeper relationship between artist and audience, encouraging fans to engage with the music and one another rather than experience the concert solely through a screen. In New York, that vision became reality and while phones were certainly still held throughout the crowd, they rarely seemed to be the center of the experience.

Outside the venue, fans handed out homemade freebies, complimented one another's outfits and struck up conversations with people they had never met. The audience appeared predominantly young, although there was also a noticeably large number of male fans in attendance. Some carried "I LOVE CORTIS" flags around the crowd, inviting other COER to sign them in hopes of eventually handing them to the members.

The camaraderie was reminiscent of that often seen among BTS' ARMY, with fans readily sharing freebies, helping one another and welcoming strangers into the experience.

Getting to the main event inside the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden, however, was considerably less seamless as even before entering, it felt as though CORTIS had already begun to outgrow the venue. As doors opened, staff attempted to direct the crowd through megaphones while attendees pushed toward the entrance despite repeated requests not to run. Inside, the limitations became even more apparent. Hallways felt cramped, merchandise lines remained lengthy and bathroom queues quickly grew.

For a rookie group embarking on its first North American tour, CORTIS already seemed almost too big for the space hosting them. However, once the lights went down, that same intimacy became one of the show's greatest strengths.

New York COER were loud from the beginning, but more importantly, they participated. The floor repeatedly moved as fans jumped together, while fanchants rang through the venue loudly enough to visibly surprise the members multiple times. This was particularly apparent during "WHAT YOU WANT," when CORTIS reacted with disbelief and pride at how well New York COER understood what was expected of them.

Speaking about what <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> really means, maknae Keonho described it as a "state of mind."

The distinction was important as the tour wasn't necessarily asking fans to stop filming or put their phones away completely. Instead, it encouraged them to make sure that documenting the concert didn't come at the expense of actually participating in it and thus forgetting to enjoy the experience that many had looked forward to for so long.

As CORTIS moved through their discography, there were moments when the atmosphere carried more of the energy of an early-2010s pop-punk show than a traditional K-POP concert. There was headbanging, screaming, jumping and very little concern about looking composed. It was messy in the best possible way. In an industry often built around precision and perfection, CORTIS seemed increasingly comfortable disrupting that expectation.

New York disrupted things so much that, at one point, the stage lights appeared to malfunction. Rather than letting it interrupt the show, the members jokingly took it as a sign of good luck and further proof that the audience was giving them exactly the energy they had hoped for.

The members repeatedly expressed their affection for New York throughout the night. James enthusiastically declared, "I've always known New York is my city. Big buildings, the streets, the pizzas, the culture, the everything."

For Keonho, the night held additional significance. Having missed CORTIS' previous appearance in the city, it marked his first time performing in New York. Seonghyeon followed his message with a promise to the audience: "We love you guys, we definitely will be back in New York soon."

Musically, the show also demonstrated how much CORTIS has settled into <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> since its opening concerts in Incheon. While the setlist remained largely similar, the transitions felt tighter and the performances more polished. The intensity that defined those first shows remained, only now there was greater synergy as CORTIS moved from one track into the next.

One of the night's biggest reactions came with "Motion," the group's latest single featuring Juicy J, as the crowd erupted almost immediately. The track later returned for an additional performance during the encore, while "Mention Me" and "REDRED" were also repeated. Moreover, "YOUNGCREATORCREW" received another performance after CORTIS handed a fan the microphone and asked them to request a song.

Much like the Incheon concerts, the night still didn't entirely feel like a traditional K-POP concert. If anything, the North American leg has only made that distinction clearer. Perhaps though, that is exactly what makes <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> special.

While a lighting malfunction, a venue that frequently felt too cramped for the demand surrounding CORTIS and the organization outside left considerable room for improvement. It just means that the group may simply need a bigger venue the next time they return to New York.

At the same time, the intimacy helped create exactly what <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> was designed to encourage. CORTIS showed that putting your phone down, after all, doesn't necessarily mean putting it away. As Keonho suggested, it's a state of mind, a reminder to enjoy something while it's happening because, before you know it, the moment is already over.

CORTIS ended the night by delivering one final message to the people who had spent nearly two hours giving that energy back to them. "I LOVE YOU COER," the five members shouted in unison with thousands of voices immediately shouting it back.
