NCT 127 is back with new music on the way for the first time in nearly two years. Now in its 10th year, the group does not appear interested in reinventing itself. If the newly released track video for "Piñata" is any indication, NCT 127 is returning to the rough edges and unpredictability that have long defined its music.

Released Aug. 11, "Piñata" is a B-side from the group's upcoming seventh full-length album, "BLINGY." It is NCT 127's first new group track since "WALK," the title track of its sixth studio album, released in July 2024. It is not the title track, but it is the first song from the new album that listeners have to hear.

There is a clear story behind the track video's fights, police sirens and late-night chaos. The members move through the city together while avoiding the police, but things fall apart when it is revealed that Jaehyun is working undercover. Haechan appears to try to change his mind as Jaehyun struggles with what to do, and the tension soon leads to fights among the members.

Taeyong later explained the storyline on fan communication platform Bubble. He said Haechan is the first to find out about Jaehyun's betrayal and tries to persuade him, asking, "We've been together for 10 years. Is this really the right thing to do?" As the other members learn the truth, tensions begin to grow within the group.

But the video does not leave them fighting. Near the end, scenes from the members' past begin to flash by, including a moment when they blow out candles together. Jaehyun draws a dog on the cast of a member who was injured in the fight, and by the final scene, they are back together, eating doughnuts as a group.

"Choose Memories" and "Choose the people who stayed" appear across the screen. Those lines give some context to what otherwise looks like a stylish crime story. The members fight, doubt one another, and nearly fall apart, but the memories they have built together ultimately bring them back together.

It is hard not to notice the timing. NCT 127 has undergone lineup changes, while military enlistments have kept the group from promoting together as it once did. That does not mean the betrayal in the video should be treated as a stand-in for anything that happened in real life. But for a group returning after a long break in its 10th year, a story about choosing shared memories and the people still beside you feels particularly fitting.

"Piñata" also stays close to the musical territory NCT 127 has explored throughout its career. Electric guitar, funky bass and breakbeat drums drive the track, layered with rap, chants and bursts of guitar solos. The song carries a distinct 2000s rap-rock feel, but the mix fits naturally with a group that has long made genre-blending part of its sound.

That same confidence carries into the lyrics. "No matter the moment, we can't go wrong," they declare, while the song uses the image of smashing open a piñata to capture their determination to turn the stage into a full-blown celebration. The track video matches that energy, with the members racing through the streets, fighting and throwing themselves into mosh-pit-like scenes.

For its release in two years, NCT 127 did not seek a dramatic reset. "Piñata" instead feels like a return to familiar ground, both in the way it sounds and in what its video chooses to focus on. After lineup changes, military enlistments and time apart, the first glimpse of "BLINGY" looks back at the years the members have shared while keeping the group's musical identity firmly intact.
