Korean actor Jang Dong-yoon is getting married in October, and he is doing it in the middle of one of the busiest stretches of his career. The announcement puts a spotlight on a small but growing group of Korean stars who are choosing to go public with love while their careers are still climbing.

On August 25, Jang Dong-yoon shared a handwritten letter on social media saying he will marry actor Kim Seung-yoon, who is five years younger. His agency, BH Entertainment, also confirmed the news. The ceremony will be a quiet church service attended only by immediate family.

"There was a lot of thought and hesitation before deciding to get married," he wrote. "Spending a long time together, we got to know many sides of each other, and we came to understand and care for each other even more." He added that the two decided "to be on each other's side from the closest place, and to live together happily and with fun."

Jang Dong-yoon has been moving between acting and directing. Last year he starred opposite Go Hyun-jung in the SBS series "Mantis: A Killer's Outing" (Samagwi: Sarinjaui Woechul), and he has a special appearance coming up in the Disney+ project "The Miracles of the Namiya General Store" (Namiya Japhwajeomui Gijeok). Born in 1992, he began directing in 2023 with the short film "Be My Ears" (Nae Gwiga Doeeojwo). Earlier this year, in April, he released his first feature as a director, "Nuruk." He first worked with his fiancée Kim Seung-yoon on the 2019 KBS drama "Tale of Nokdu" (Joseonroko Nokdujeon), and she also appeared in both of his directorial projects. The couple has not shared when they started dating.

Actor Jo Bo-ah took a similar path. Born in 1991, she married a non-celebrity in October 2024. There had been no public dating news, and the timing drew attention. She had just finished shooting the Netflix series "Tangeum" and was preparing for upcoming projects including the Disney+ drama "Knock-Off." She kept working steadily after the wedding. In an interview last year, she said she felt "work and private life are separate."

Actor Lee Chae-min offers another version of the same choice, without the wedding. Born in 2000, he has become one of the fastest-rising leading men of his generation. He met fellow actor Roh Jeong-eui, the same age, on the 2023 tvN drama "Crash Course in Romance," and the two confirmed their relationship in March 2024. It is rare for a young, still-rising actor to keep dating out in the open, and the couple drew a lot of interest.

Since going public, Lee Chae-min has only grown as a lead. He took starring roles in the Netflix series "Hierarchy" and the tvN drama "The Tyrant's Chef" (Poggunui Chef), expanding his standing in the industry. His career has kept climbing right alongside his public relationship. Roh Jeong-eui has also continued taking on projects.

There are older examples too. Actors Park Shin-hye and Choi Tae-joon, and singers Min Hyo-rin and Taeyang, went public with their relationships and eventually married while their careers were in full swing. They kept working in their own fields afterward. What feels different lately is that stars are no longer waiting for a quiet stretch. More of them are getting engaged, married, or dating openly while their names are still being made and while their next projects are already lined up.

For a star, dating and marriage are tied closely to public image and fandom, which is why these announcements are usually handled with care. For actors who lead romance projects, or who have strong opposite-gender fandoms, opening up their private lives can carry real weight. The pressure is often heavier for newer actors, whose on-screen image tends to blur with how the public sees them in real life. That is part of why public relationships among rising actors are still not that common.

Even so, more stars are choosing to build a career and a personal life at the same time, rather than picking one. Jang Dong-yoon decided to marry while juggling acting and directing. Jo Bo-ah started a family with several projects ahead of her. Lee Chae-min is dating Roh Jeong-eui openly as he moves into leading-man status. In an industry where privacy has long been treated as a career strategy, that choice is starting to look like its own kind of statement.
