Nana to Lead Netflix Thriller "Ma Deresa" From "Queen of Tears" Director

Netflix is expanding its Korean thriller lineup with a new series built around cold cases, hidden pasts, and a criminal psychologist with no room for sentiment. The streamer has confirmed production on "Ma Deresa" and revealed its three leads: Nana, Kim Dan and Jung Gun-joo.

Nana takes the title role as a criminal psychologist described as someone who shows neither emotion or mercy. The series reunites two well-known creative teams behind the camera. Director Jang Young-woo of "Queen of Tears" leads the project, with writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won of "The East Palace" (Donggung) writing the script.

"Ma Deresa" a cold-blooded criminal psychologist and professo, played by Nana. She digs into a string of unsolved murder cases with help from Park Seol (Kim Dan), an assistant hiding a secret behind an innocent face, and Yoo A-ram (Jung Gun-joo), a longtime friend who works as a prosecutor. As the cases open up, so do truths and feelings that have been buried for years.

Ma Deresa is asked to consult on high-profile cold cases that once shook the public. She carries her own trauma from the past. She meets the criminals face to face, questions them directly, and pieces together the leads one by one. The closer she gets to the truth she has chased for so long, the more she is caught off guard by emotions she did not expect.

By her side is Park Seol, an assistant who has worked with her for years. Behind a pure face and a soft smile, Park Seol keeps her own secrets. She craves Ma Deresa's attention as she helps with the investigation. What runs between the two feels like more than the relationship between a professor and her assistant.

Yoo A-ram, Ma Deresa's longtime friend and a prosecutor, joins the case as well. He starts to keep a close watch on Park Seol as she grows closer to Ma Deresa. The series pairs the cold-case thriller with the shifting emotions and relationships building between the three.

Nana leads the cast as Ma Deresa. Known for the Netflix series "Mask Girl" and "Glitch," as well as the films "Omniscient Reader: The Prophet," "Confession" and "The Swindlers," she takes on both the sharp edge of a cool-headed criminal psychologist and the tangled inner life of someone shaped by old wounds.

Kim Dan plays Park Seol. With credits including "The Winning Try" (Try: Urineun Gijeogi Doenda) and "Love Track: Kimchi" (Love : Track - Kimchi), she steps into the role of an assistant who wants Ma Deresa's attention and hides her real thoughts behind a smile.

Jung Gun-joo plays Yoo A-ram, Ma Deresa's longtime friend and a prosecutor. His past work includes the Netflix series "Mercy for None" (Gwangjang), the dramas "Way Back Love" (Naega Jukgi Iljuil Jeon) and "Check in Hanyang" (Check-in Hanyang), and the film "Rebound." He helps Ma Deresa while sizing up Park Seol, adding tension to the trio.

Directing duties go to Jang Young-woo, who previously worked on "Queen of Tears" and "Bulgasal: Immortal Souls." The script comes from Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, whose credits include the Netflix series "The East Palace" and the drama "The Guest" (Son the Guest).

"Ma Deresa" will be released on Netflix.
