Kim Young-kwang, Chae Soo-bin Lead Netflix Rom-Com "Take Charge of My Heart" Set for October 9
Netflix has set Oct. 9 as the premiere date for its new Korean romantic comedy series "Take Charge of My Heart," releasing a teaser poster and trailer that lay out the show's playful high-concept hook. The series stars Kim Young-kwang and Chae Soo-bin as an unlikely couple whose relationship literally runs on electricity.
The show follows a man whose artificial heart battery has run out and a woman with the power to conduct electricity through her touch. Based on the Korean web novel of the same name, "Take Charge of My Heart" marks the first romantic comedy from director Park Soo-won, known for the witty tone of "Work Later, Drink Now 2" and "Birthcare Center."
Kim Young-kwang plays Baek Ho-rang, a sharp-edged third-generation heir to a family conglomerate. Chae Soo-bin plays Na Bo-bae, a television drama writer whose unusual electric ability has kept her at a distance from other people for most of her life. The pairing brings together two actors already familiar to Korean romance viewers, and the setup gives each a fresh twist on the genre.
The teaser poster leans into that twist. Baek Ho-rang and Na Bo-bae stand side by side, and a pink spark rises from their joined hands. Charging icons float above their heads, and a small pink switch flickers on over Baek Ho-rang's heart. The tagline reads, "Touch to charge, part to drain, shocked by love."
The teaser trailer opens with Na Bo-bae's confession. She was struck by lightning as a child and has lived with an electric ability ever since, shocking anyone she touches. Baek Ho-rang, an executive at TS Resort, is facing two major turning points at once: surgery to replace his artificial heart battery and the succession of his family's TS Group.
When the two accidentally cross paths and their lips meet, Na Bo-bae realizes something surprising. Her electric ability does not affect Baek Ho-rang at all. She tries to hold on to this "human rubber glove," as the trailer puts it, but Baek Ho-rang, who has no idea what is going on, dismisses her right away.
Their story does not end there. On the day of Baek Ho-rang's surgery, a blackout hits the hospital and his artificial heart battery dies. For reasons no one can explain, standing near Na Bo-bae recharges it. Na Bo-bae, meanwhile, is nearing the end of her writing contract and under pressure from her director to deliver a mature, grown-up romance, something she has never been able to experience herself because of her ability.
Baek Ho-rang proposes a solution. "Just charge me for three months, until my next surgery," he says in the trailer, as their hands meet again.
"Take Charge of My Heart" premieres Oct. 9, only on Netflix.
