Claims that BLACKPINK's Lisa addressed a past controversy involving a leaked pre-debut video have been spreading online following the premiere of her documentary "Always Lalisa" at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The documentary, directed by Sue Kim, premiered at TIFF on Sept. 11. Following the screening, attendees shared accounts on social media claiming that Lisa discussed the controversy during a Q&A session, addressing a trainee-era video in which she was heard rapping lyrics containing the N-word.

The controversy dates back to March 2025, when an individual claiming to be a former YG Entertainment employee leaked several videos said to have been recorded before BLACKPINK's debut. Footage involving Lisa, Jennie and Rosé drew criticism after the members were heard performing rap songs containing the racial slur.

According to accounts circulating on social media, Lisa explained during the Q&A that she was very young when the footage was recorded and had recently moved from Thailand to South Korea. She reportedly said English was not her first language and that she did not understand the word's racist history or why its use was unacceptable at the time. She was also said to have acknowledged that she has since educated herself on the issue and would never use the word again.

Some attendees also said Lisa wanted to address the controversy through her company LLOUD when the footage surfaced, but that YG opposed issuing a statement over concerns that it could further escalate the situation. Lisa was facing intense backlash and threats at the time.

The reported remarks have prompted mixed reactions online. Some have pointed to Lisa's young age and language and cultural background at the time, while also questioning the responsibility of entertainment companies to educate trainees. Others have questioned why the controversy was not addressed sooner.

For now, details of Lisa's reported comments are largely based on accounts shared by those who attended the TIFF premiere, leaving the full context of her remarks unclear. "Always Lalisa" is set for a limited theatrical and IMAX release worldwide on Oct. 12, when the documentary and further context surrounding the controversy are expected to become more widely available.
