IU Responds to Criticism Over Recent Styling and Promotion: "It's My Responsibility"

Singer and actress IU has personally addressed fans' concerns over the promotion of her latest music and criticism directed at her agency and styling team.

On Sept. 30, IU shared a lengthy message on fan platform Berriz, saying she decided to speak up after noticing growing frustration among fans. She revealed that she regularly keeps an eye on online reactions and was already aware of discussions surrounding both her latest release and styling.

IU explained that the two-song release had not originally been planned. After health issues forced her to postpone her sixth full-length album, originally scheduled for September, as well as an October concert, she decided to release new music to make the wait easier for fans.

She also clarified that the limited promotion was her decision, not a lack of effort from her agency, EDAM Entertainment. According to IU, the company's marketing team had suggested additional promotional activities, but she preferred to save a larger promotional push for next year's full-length album.

"If you felt the promotion was lacking or disappointing, that responsibility is entirely mine," she wrote, adding that EDAM had respected her decisions and staff had worked hard to accommodate the unexpected release.

IU also addressed criticism surrounding her hair, makeup and styling team. She said she was aware that concerns had increased recently, including speculation that she or her agency insisted on working with particular stylists.

IU denied that claim and explained that multiple contact allergies severely restrict the hair and cosmetic products she can use. Her stylists have researched ingredients, accompanied her to hospital visits and even tested products themselves before using them on her.

Those restrictions can also affect her appearance during schedules, IU explained. Because she cannot use certain hair sprays and is limited to specific makeup products, hairstyles may lose their shape in hot conditions and her makeup can appear similar across appearances.

IU said she wanted to clarify the situation because she did not want the stylists who had worked to protect her health to be misunderstood. She added that she plans to experiment with new combinations and looks in future activities.

Meanwhile, IU released the digital single "Unknown Planet" on Sept. 10, featuring two title tracks written by the singer. The release previews her upcoming sixth full-length album and drew attention for its space-themed concept and her new short haircut.
