Seo Hyun-jin, Yoo Yeon Seok Face Off in Psychological Thriller 'The Perfect Lie'

Actress Seo Hyun-jin has a suggestion for viewers of her new drama: watch it in three parts. She shared what viewers should look out for in "The Perfect Lie" (Raieo), the upcoming MBC series in which she stars opposite actor Yoo Yeon Seok.

"The Perfect Lie" premieres on Oct. 30 on MBC, one of South Korea's major broadcasters. It is a psychological thriller about a man and a woman who tell very different stories of the same memory.

The premise is simple: one of the two leads is lying. Yoo plays Min Jun-ho, and Seo plays Kang Ji-seon. Min Jun-ho is kind yet cold, while Kang Ji-seon is warm but sensitive. As their stories clash, the question of who is telling the truth drives the drama forward.

Seo said she thought carefully about when Kang Ji-seon should reveal her feelings on screen.

"From episode 1 through episode 12, I talked with the director about how much to show at the key moment of every scene," she said.

As new facts come out throughout the story, Seo explained, she adjusted how much emotion she portray to match each episode's development.

The production team said it was pleased with her work. It highlighted how her acting in the scenes that follow Kang Ji-seon's emotional changes throughout the series.

Seo said the drama is best viewed in three sections.

"This is something I also talked about with director Cho Young-min," she said. "I think 'The Perfect Lie' can be divided into three chapters. Episodes 1 to 4, 5 to 8, and 9 to 12."

The flow shifts with each chapter, and she hopes that keeps the audience on edge.

"As the story changes in each chapter, I hope viewers will start doubting all over again and wonder who on earth is lying," she said.

"The Perfect Lie" premieres on Oct. 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST. It will go head to head in the same time slot with "Doctor X: Mafia in White" (Dakteo X) on rival broadcaster SBS. In a story built around doubt and suspicion, the real test may be whether viewers stick around long enough as each episode changes their perspective.
