October has become a battleground for K-POP girl groups. Rookie act A2O LITE, produced by Lee Soo-man, topped a major Korean music chart shortly after its debut, while girl groups from HYBE, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and Starship Entertainment are entering the competition. The lineup spans newcomers and established groups now in their fifth or sixth year since debut, each facing different expectations.

YG Entertainment's BABYMONSTER released its digital single "DESERVE" on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. KST, marking its first new song in approximately four months. Known for its hard-hitting hip-hop and dance tracks, the group is taking a different approach with a pop ballad. Yang Hyun-suk, YG Entertainment's executive producer, highlighted the members' delicate vocals and powerful singing.

BABYMONSTER has continued to expand its global fan base through its second world tour. The question now is whether "DESERVE" can broaden the group's musical identity and showcase its versatility. It remains to be seen whether the change in musical direction will also attract listeners beyond its existing fandom.

Before BABYMONSTER's comeback, rookie girl group A2O LITE had already set the stage for October's girl group competition. The group released its debut single "NEON" on Oct. 13 and reached No. 1 on Melon's Top 100 chart just 29 hours later. Produced by Lee Soo-man, key producer at A2O Entertainment, the group had generated buzz even before its debut and followed that interest with an impressive chart performance.

The rookie group's rapid rise has raised expectations for other acts releasing new music this month. Established groups with larger fandoms and greater name recognition, now face heightened expectations to deliver comparable results.

JYP Entertainment's NMIXX released its sixth EP, "Strange Muse," on Oct. 19. The six-track album is led by "Birthday Wish" and features the group's first-ever unit tracks, performed by three different member pairings.

Last year, NMIXX scored its first No. 1 on Melon's Top 100 with "Blue Valentine," which went on to top the platform's daily, weekly and monthly charts. The success marked a breakthrough for a group known for its signature MIXX POP sound, demonstrating that its distinctive musical identity could appeal to a broader audience. This comeback will test whether NMIXX can build on that success and maintain its growing mainstream appeal.

Two more groups, ILLIT and IVE, are set to release new albums on Oct. 26. ILLIT, under HYBE subsidiary BELIFT LAB, will return with its fifth EP, "BREAK EVEN." The group previewed the title track, "You're Under Arrest," at its encore concerts in Incheon on Oct. 17 and 18.

The pre-release performance drew mixed reactions from some online users. Some criticized aspects of the choreography and the prominent use of whistles, while others praised the song's catchy melody. After achieving major success with its debut single "Magnetic," ILLIT now faces the challenge of building on that early momentum and reaching an even wider audience with its new release.

Starship Entertainment's IVE will release its fifth EP, "Looks Can Kill," on the same day. The group pre-released the title track of the same name on Oct. 19, introducing a "Girl Hero" concept that builds on its earlier "Girl Fantasy" universe. The song's music video quickly climbed to No. 1 on YouTube's global music video trending chart.

IVE has established a strong track record of hits. Earlier this year, "BANG BANG" achieved a perfect all-kill, reaching No. 1 across South Korea's major music charts simultaneously. That success has also raised expectations for the group's latest release, which must offer something new while maintaining the appeal that made IVE one of K-POP's leading girl groups.

The year-end broadcast schedule is another factor driving the October comeback rush. Regular weekly music shows are often canceled or rescheduled in November and December to make room for award ceremonies and year-end specials.

"As the end of the year gets closer, there are fewer chances to appear on music shows, so a lot of groups prefer an October comeback," one music industry insider said. "It also lets them promote fully on music shows and carry that momentum through to the year-end stages."

The crowded lineup could also work in the groups' favor. Competition on streaming charts and weekly music shows may intensify, but the rivalry itself can generate publicity. As fans and listeners compare new releases and chart results, the heightened attention could increase visibility for all the acts involved.

Despite promoting during the same period, the groups face different challenges. A2O LITE needs to build on its early breakthrough and turn initial interest into lasting popularity and a stable fan base. BABYMONSTER and ILLIT, meanwhile, must strengthen their musical identities while sustaining their growth.

For NMIXX and IVE, the challenge is different. Both have established themselves in the industry, and their latest releases will test whether they can maintain their previous success while finding new sources of growth.

For the newer acts, the Octobers crowded comeback season provides an opportunity to prove their potential. For the more established groups, it is an opportunity to reaffirm their staying power. With A2O LITE already topping Melon's Top 100, attention is now turning to how the other groups will perform in an increasingly crowded field.
