HYBE CINE FEST 2026 is transforming movie theaters into temporary K-POP concert venues, bringing together live concert screenings, interactive cheering experiences and fan activities designed to recreate the atmosphere of a concert beyond the stadium.

Running from October 24 to 31 across more than 1,100 theaters in over 60 countries, the festival features concert films from SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER and ENHYPEN, alongside two BTS "ARIRANG" world tour live viewings and the HYBE Cheering Party.

At LOTTE CINEMA World Tower in Seoul on October 25, the festival demonstrated how different formats can encourage fan participation, although the contrast between its traditional concert screening and more experimental interactive program also highlighted the challenges of bringing concert culture into cinemas.

The delayed screening of BTS's Buenos Aires concert offered perhaps the clearest example of how a movie theater can become a shared concert space.

Despite the performance having already taken place in Argentina, Korean and international fans arrived at the Seoul theater with their light sticks, ready to experience the show together. Many were already familiar with the concert's surprise songs and key moments, yet that knowledge did little to diminish their enthusiasm.

Throughout the screening, attendees cheered and reacted to the performances as though the members were standing onstage in front of them. For K-POP audiences, where light sticks, fan chants and synchronized participation are central elements of concert culture, the screening offered an opportunity to engage in familiar traditions without physically attending the tour.

The HYBE Cheering Party took a noticeably different approach, attempting to make the audience's participation part of the content itself.

Featuring music videos and performance footage from 13 HYBE-affiliated acts, including BTS, SEVENTEEN, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM, KATSEYE and SANTOS BRAVOS, the program incorporated 3D effects and visual instructions encouraging viewers to sing along, cheer and raise their light sticks at designated moments.

Rather than resembling a conventional concert film, the experience was reminiscent of Nintendo Wii-era music games or arcade rhythm games, where participants follow visual prompts synchronized with the music.

This game-like structure was arguably the program's most distinctive feature. By adding interactive instructions to existing music videos, HYBE attempted to transform content that fans can already watch online into a collective activity.

However, the atmosphere inside the theater was noticeably quieter than during the BTS screening. Although several attendees brought light sticks, the smaller audience meant the collective energy was less pronounced.

The contrast revealed an interesting challenge. While concert screenings allow fans to respond naturally to performances, the Cheering Party relies more heavily on audiences following instructions and actively engaging with the format.

That distinction becomes especially noticeable in a cinema, where the experience depends not only on the content but also on how comfortable and willing other viewers are to participate. Furthermore, scheduling presented another limitation. The Cheering Party overlapped with the BTS live viewing, making it difficult for fans interested in both programs to experience each in full.

Although coordinating multiple screenings across an international festival inevitably presents logistical challenges, offering a wider selection of screening times could have given audiences greater flexibility and potentially encouraged more participation.

Still, the Cheering Party's concept offered possibilities beyond movie theaters. Its combination of music videos, synchronized cheering prompts and light-stick participation could translate naturally into a console or arcade rhythm game, where interaction would become the central attraction rather than an additional feature.

A game-based format could also allow fans to participate individually or in groups, potentially extending the experience beyond the limited screening period. Rather than suggesting the concept does not belong in cinemas, the experience raised a broader question about which platforms are best suited to interactive K-POP content.

Beyond the screenings, HYBE CINE FEST's special location activities helped recreate another familiar aspect of K-POP concerts: the fan zones surrounding the screening rooms.

At LOTTE CINEMA World Tower, themed installations and designated activity areas gave visitors opportunities to engage with their favorite artists before and after the screenings.

Among the most memorable features were the fan message walls, where attendees could leave handwritten messages of support. The walls featured notes from fans from different countries, including Mexico, reflecting the international audience that K-POP continues to attract.

These installations resembled the fan zones commonly found at major concerts, where attendees gather to take photographs, exchange messages and participate in activities before entering the venue.

For international fans in particular, such spaces can provide an opportunity to engage with the wider fandom even when attending the artists' concerts in person may not be possible.

The 2026 festival also marks a significant expansion for HYBE's cinema initiative.

First held across 11 Latin American countries in 2024, the event attracted approximately 260,000 attendees. This year's festival has grown to more than 60 countries and over 1,100 theaters, bringing together multiple HYBE artists under one international event. The expansion reflects an effort to create additional opportunities for fans to experience concert content outside traditional live performances.

It also demonstrates how entertainment companies can extend the reach of concert productions through theatrical distribution, particularly in markets where touring schedules, venue availability and travel costs can limit opportunities to attend live shows.

However, the Seoul experience also showed that different forms of participation do not necessarily translate equally well into the cinema environment.

The BTS screening benefited from an established concert format and an audience already familiar with its traditions, while the Cheering Party introduced a newer experience that depended more directly on active engagement with on-screen instructions.

Meanwhile, the fan zones demonstrated that some of the most effective elements of the festival did not require a screen at all.

Ultimately, HYBE CINE FEST 2026 showed that movie theaters can serve as extensions of K-POP concert culture, offering fans another place to gather and participate in shared experiences.

While the BTS live viewing recreated the excitement of a concert and the Cheering Party explored a more experimental form of interaction, the combination of screenings and offline activities suggested that the festival's broader appeal lies in bringing different aspects of fandom together.

The challenge moving forward may not simply be making cinemas feel more like concerts, but identifying which experiences genuinely benefit from being shared in a theater and which could find new audiences through other formats.
