2PM
Active"Heartbeat," released in late 2009, announced a shift in what a K-pop boy group could look and sound like. Raw, percussive, and built around a choreography that had members performing chest-popping moves as if simulating a literal heartbeat, the single helped establish 2PM as the act JYP Entertainment would market as "beastly idols" — a deliberate contrast to the polished, softer image that dominated the era. That positioning, and the run of singles that followed, made 2PM one of the defining acts of the second generation of K-pop.
Debut and early formation
2PM debuted on September 4, 2008, under JYP Entertainment, initially as a seven-member group that included Park Jaebeom — known later by the stage name Jay Park — as leader. Their debut extended play, *Hottest Time of the Day*, introduced the group alongside the track "10 Out of 10," which established their blend of R&B-inflected pop and performance-forward staging. The fandom that formed around them took the name HOTTEST, a callback to that first release.
The group's early trajectory was interrupted in 2009 when Jay Park departed following a controversy over past social media posts, a high-profile episode that drew sustained public attention in South Korea. The remaining six members continued, and the disruption did not halt their commercial momentum — if anything, the period that followed produced some of their most commercially successful work.
Music and discography
The 2009 extended play *2:00PM Time for Change* and the full-length *01:59PM – The First Album* bracketed the group's first full year, with "Again & Again" emerging as a signature song from that cycle. The track's success demonstrated the group's reach beyond a debut audience.
"Heartbeat," issued as a standalone single later that year, became among their most recognizable recordings and cemented the physical, high-intensity performance style the group was built around. The 2010 period extended that run with "Without U" and the novelty track "Cabi Song," the latter a collaboration tied to a Thai tourism campaign that reflected Nichkhun's role as a bridge between the group's Korean fanbase and a significant Thai following.
By 2011, 2PM were releasing in multiple markets simultaneously. The album *Hands Up* and its title track gave the group a more festival-ready, uptempo register, while "Take Off" — a Japanese single — marked the start of sustained activity in Japan. *Republic of 2PM*, also released that year, demonstrated their capacity to sustain a full-length format. The Japan releases, compiled on *All About 2PM*, showed the group operating as a dual-market act at scale.
The 2012–2015 period saw 2PM working across Korean and Japanese releases with consistent output. "Beautiful" and "Masquerade" appeared in 2012, the latter showing a more mature sonic direction. The 2013 album *Grown* was among the group's more critically noted Korean releases, and *Go Crazy!* in 2014 returned to the high-energy template that had defined their early years. The Japanese compilation *Genesis of 2PM* (2014) gathered their work for that market. *2PM of 2PM*, released in 2015, functioned as a retrospective of their Japanese catalog.
Members
2PM's current six-member line-up, following Jay Park's departure, comprises:
- Jun. K — main vocalist
- Nichkhun — vocalist, rapper, and the group's visual; a Thai-American member whose presence expanded the group's Southeast Asian profile significantly
- Taecyeon — main rapper, sub-vocalist; also established a parallel career as a television actor
- Wooyoung — main dancer, lead vocalist
- Junho — main vocalist and lead dancer; developed a substantial solo career in music and acting alongside group activities
- Chansung — lead rapper, vocalist, and the group's maknae (youngest member)
Activities
Beyond their recorded output, individual members pursued parallel careers that kept the group's collective profile visible across entertainment sectors. Taecyeon and Junho both built substantial acting filmographies. Junho in particular earned recognition for his drama work, reaching audiences outside the core K-pop fanbase. Nichkhun remained a recognizable face in Thailand and across Southeast Asia. Wooyoung appeared on the dating reality program *Noona Is My Woman 2* in 2026, commenting publicly on the show's evolving cast dynamics.
The group's bonds remained publicly visible into their mid-career. In April 2026, all six members attended Taecyeon's wedding — Jun. K, Wooyoung, Junho, and Nichkhun performed a congratulatory song, while Chansung served as host — a moment that drew wide coverage as a demonstration of the group's sustained closeness.
Standing and significance
2PM belong to a cohort of groups that shaped the commercial and aesthetic grammar of K-pop in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Their "beastly idol" framing — emphasizing physicality, charisma, and a more overtly masculine performance register — offered a distinct lane within a crowded market and influenced how subsequent groups were positioned by their labels. Their dual-market presence in Korea and Japan, sustained over several years and multiple full-length releases, placed them among the more durably active acts of their generation. The fandom name HOTTEST, drawn from their first release, has remained in use across nearly two decades of activity.
