"Hot Issue" announced 4Minute before the group had barely introduced itself. Released at debut in June 2009 under Cube Entertainment, the single dropped the group into the middle of a crowded second-generation K-pop landscape and immediately framed what the quintet would spend the better part of seven years refining: a blunt, synth-driven sound built more on attitude than polish, and a commercial instinct sharp enough to sustain a steady run of charting material through the early 2010s. The group disbanded in June 2016 after Cube Entertainment declined to renew contracts, ending one of the label's foundational acts.

Debut and Formation

4Minute launched on June 18, 2009, with their debut EP For Muzik and the lead single "Hot Issue." Cube Entertainment, itself a relatively new label at the time, positioned the group as a vehicle for a harder-edged girl group sound — heavy on synth-pop production, rap verses, and performance choreography designed for maximum visibility on music programs. The five-member lineup consisted of Jihyun, HyunA, Gayoon, Jiyoon, and Sohyun, with Jihyun serving as leader. HyunA, who had previously been a member of Wonder Girls before a brief hiatus, arrived with existing public recognition and quickly became the group's most prominent individual face.

Music and Discography

The group's output between 2009 and 2014 was prolific by any measure. Their debut year alone produced multiple singles alongside the EP, including "Muzik," "Winter Line," "What a Girl Wants," and "Jingle Jingle." The early material leaned hard into synth-pop construction with rap passages distributed primarily between HyunA and Jiyoon, while Gayoon anchored the vocal performances.

2010 marked an expansion in scope. The EP Hit Your Heart and the full-length album Diamond arrived in the same year, accompanied by singles including "I My Me Mine," "HuH," and "Superstar." "I My Me Mine" in particular demonstrated the group's sharper commercial edge — a confident, stripped-back track that leaned into the attitude-forward delivery that distinguished them from more conventionally polished contemporaries.

The 2011 album 4Minutes Left continued the pattern, with "Why" and "Mirror Mirror" among its tracks. By 2012, the EP Volume Up and the accompanying single represented a denser, more aggressive production direction. A Japanese compilation, Best of 4Minute, was released the same year, marking Cube's effort to extend the group's reach into that market.

2013's EP Name is 4Minute produced "What's Your Name?," a track that drew on an uptempo, call-and-response structure characteristic of mid-period 4Minute, and the group continued releasing material through 4Minute World in 2014. The discography as a whole reflects a label strategy of consistent activity — few extended gaps between releases, and a sound that evolved in production texture without dramatically departing from the synth-driven framework established at debut.

Members

4Minute's original and primary lineup comprised five members:

  • Jihyun (Nam Ji-hyun) — leader, lead dancer, vocalist, visual
  • HyunA (Kim Hyun-ah) — main dancer, main rapper, vocalist, face of the group
  • Gayoon (Heo Gayoon) — main vocalist
  • Jiyoon (Jeon Ji-yoon) — lead rapper, lead vocalist
  • Sohyun (Kwon So-hyun) — lead dancer, vocalist, rapper, maknae

As of the structured data available to K-Pop!t, the group also lists current members under the stage names Allzwell, JENYER, Sunhwa, and mOnSteR nO.9, though the relationship of these members to the original lineup's post-disbandment activities or any reconstituted formation has not been detailed in available material.

After Disbandment

In the decade following the group's June 2016 disbandment, the former members have moved across noticeably different paths. HyunA continued the most visible entertainment career, eventually marrying. Jiyoon — who performed under the name Jeon Ji-yoon — revealed in early 2026 that she had quietly begun writing web novels, with her pen name not yet disclosed publicly.

Sohyun, known off-stage as Kwon So-hyun, transitioned into acting. By mid-2026 she had been cast in the horror film *Pink Box* and was playing a supporting role in the drama *Empathy Cell*, where her character drew on the experience of a former idol turned actress. Jihyun, Nam Ji-hyun off-stage, disclosed in early 2026 that she had spent time working as a barre instructor after using exercise to manage depression during a period away from entertainment, and had accumulated nine fitness certifications across disciplines.

Gayoon, Heo Gayoon, spoke candidly on tvN's *You Quiz on the Block* in early 2026 about having lived in Bali for three years following the 2020 death of her brother, describing the move as a response to the emotional void that followed. On the same program she disclosed a seven-year experience with bulimia that had begun during her years in the group — disclosures that drew significant public attention and framed her post-group life in terms considerably more complicated than career alone.

Standing

4Minute operated at the center of Cube Entertainment's early catalog and helped establish the label's commercial footing during the group's most active years. Their sustained release schedule and consistent charting presence across 2009 to 2014 made them one of the more durable girl groups of the second-generation period. The group's fandom, known as 4NIA, remained attached to the members individually in the years following disbandment, as coverage of each member's post-group activities continued to generate audience interest well into the mid-2020s.
