Who Are WAYF BOYS? Viral Group Finally Reveals Members
Newly unveiled group, WAYF BOYS, is drawing attention even before its official debut through an unconventional promotional strategy centered on anonymity, music and curiosity. Under the banner of "Nu-Kpop," WAYF BOYS is positioning itself not simply as the first act of a broader creative movement.
Managed by WAYF, an acronym for "Where Art Yields Freedom," the company was founded by producer and DJ Czaer with the goal of creating an environment where artists can express themselves freely and develop their own creative identities.
The five-member group consisting of Andrew, Ryan Hwang, Lee Jun-myeong, Anderson and Samuel, was recently revealed as the official lineup of WAYF BOYS. While the group's name may be new, several members already have experience within the entertainment industry.
Andrew, who was raised in Dallas, Texas, previously competed on Mnet's survival show Boys II Planet, where he ranked 54th. Lee Jun-myeong appeared on SBS's B:MY BOYZ but was unable to participate in the program's final round due to health issues. Canadian-Filipino member Anderson was introduced to viewers through SM Entertainment's survival program NCT LASTART, while Ryan Hwang, who was born in New York, was also introduced as a contestant on Boys II Planet representing WAYF. Lastly, Samuel is a Korean-American trainee, who previously was rumored to be under Jay Park's MORE VISION label as a trainee before joining WAYF.
Prior to the official member reveal, WAYF BOYS had already generated significant online buzz through a marketing campaign that concealed the members' identities. Rather than revealing their faces, the group shared cryptic images featuring a minimalist cartoon character with spiky red hair, closed eyes and an X-shaped mouth, sparking widespread speculation across social media.
Interest grew even further after the group released a short a cappella cover of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature." The clip quickly gained traction on platforms including X and TikTok, with many users praising the members' vocal abilities despite knowing little about who they were. Within just 10 days of launching their social media accounts, WAYF BOYS surpassed 300,000 followers, an achievement that was accomplished before any member identities had even been released.
The group's concept also extends beyond its promotional strategy. Rather than positioning themselves within the established framework of K-pop's fifth generation, WAYF BOYS has introduced the idea of "Nu-Kpop," a term they describe as a new cultural movement rather than a musical genre. The concept seeks to combine music, fashion, lifestyle, digital culture and creator-driven autonomy into a single creative ecosystem.
Executive producer, Czaer, has expressed his strong support for the vision, stating, "We want to become a company that opens up possibilities for artists." He added, "WAYF's role is to help artists find their own unique style and grow within a free creative environment."
Discussing the philosophy behind Nu-Kpop, Czaer further explained, "If K-pop expanded globally through a systematic system, Nu-Kpop is a movement that creates culture itself," adding, "WAYF BOYS will be the first example of this."
With their identity fully revealed and their global fanbase continuing to grow within social platforms, WAYFBOYS is planning to unveil their first project on the 26th of June. This will allow audiences to have a first look and exactly grasp what the identity of ‘Nu-Kpop’ is meant to be.
