K-Pop Idols-Turned-Actors Lift 'Director's Arena' Semifinal as Upsets Shake Top 10
ENA and Lifetime’s high-stakes directing survival competition Director's Arena tightened its ongoing semifinal round, drawing heavy viewer traction with a wave of star-studded idol-turned-actor cameos and a string of highly unexpected results.
The remaining Top 10 directors faced off in a ruthless semifinal death match on the show’s sixth episode, which aired on June 19. By the end of the broadcast, four visionary directors successfully secured their coveted spots in the next round, with the final seat intentionally held in suspense until the upcoming seventh episode.
Director Han Sang-il opened the night strong with a captivating piece built around former Wanna One member Park Woo-jin, pulling off a wide-margin victory over rival Jung Joo. While reviewing the dramatic results, host Cha Tae-hyun turned to legendary filmmaker Lee Byung-heon, jokingly asking if the work leaned toward a "textbook B-movie" aesthetic. Lee quickly shot back, "I'm always making A-grade stuff. People just happen to read it as B." Comedian Jang Do-yeon instantly cut in with, "That's actually a sad story," drawing roaring laughs from the studio panel.
Lee famously cemented his commercial reputation with the smash-hit feature films Twenty and Extreme Job, the latter of which drew a historic 16.26 million admissions in South Korea. He has seamlessly carried that sharp comedic instinct into mainstream television with critically acclaimed dramas including Be Melodramatic and Pour the Soju, Genie.
Actor Lee Joo-seung's directorial entry also screened on the night, going head-to-head against early tournament favorite Han Su-ji. Lee Joo-seung's piece starred seasoned actress Yoon So-yi, whose grounded, emotional performance immediately pulled the entire room in. "Joo-seung is remarkably good at this, so it's incredibly fun to watch," Lee Byung-heon praised. The episode stopped short of declaring a definitive winner between the two powerhouses, leaving the final result set to air in episode 7.
The technical judging itself produced one of the night's most controversial moments. The intense match between Lee Yu-jin and Go Hyun-guk came down to a razor-thin single vote, after which director Eun Jong-hoon admitted on the spot that he had accidentally hit the stop button on Go Hyun-guk's piece by mistake. Jang Do-yeon called him out for the blunder directly on air. Without the accidental slip, the two competing directors would have ended the round in a dead tie.
Meanwhile, Lee Dong-hoon soundly defeated Yoon Hyung-sik to lock in his guaranteed place in the next phase. However, the biggest upset of the evening occurred in the closely watched match between Yang Kyung-hee and Park So-rang. Park's short film featured high-profile cameos by former SS501 member Kim Kyu-jong and actor Hyun Bong-sik, a savvy casting choice that played exceptionally well with the panel. While Yang initially trailed Park in the subscriber-panel vote, the show's exclusive judging group, the Five Stars, concentrated their technical stop buttons on Park's piece—instantly flipping the final result in Yang's favor.
With the dust settled, Lee Yu-jin, Han Sang-il, Lee Dong-hoon, and Yang Kyung-hee have officially advanced to the next round. The final remaining seat will be decided when the highly anticipated results of Lee Joo-seung and Han Su-ji's battle are revealed in episode 7, airing on June 26.
