Red Velvet's Wendy Vows Legal Action Over Body-Shaming Comments

Red Velvet's Wendy is taking legal action against malicious online posts. Her agency ASND said the singer has been the target of a steady wave of comments attacking her body and appearance.

In an official statement released on the 19th, ASND said the company has been tracking "malicious commentary and disparagement targeting the artist's appearance and body, as well as posts and comments that sexually objectify her, amounting to sexual harassment."

The agency drew a hard line on what it considers protected speech. "Acts that sexually reference or evaluate specific parts of the artist's body, mock or demean her appearance and body, or maliciously spread false information cannot be viewed as simple opinion or freedom of expression," ASND said. "They are clear cases of defamation that violate the artist's dignity and rights."

The company said it is already gathering evidence. "We will continue to collect the posts and comments currently identified, along with any malicious content confirmed going forward, as evidence," ASND said. "We will respond firmly to any act that infringes on the artist's rights, regardless of scale."

The statement follows a stretch of online attention around Wendy's recent appearance, after fans noted she looked slimmer than before. Some responses expressed concern for her health. Others turned into personal attacks, with baseless speculation and insulting language circulating about her body. Critics said the commentary had crossed a line.
