Seoul's flagship outdoor media art festival returns this fall with a program built around the roots of Korean creativity. Seoul Design Foundation announced that "Seoul Light DDP 2026 Fall" opens on September 3 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), running under the theme "K-Original Light."

The festival will light up DDP's 222-meter exterior wall with new works that reinterpret some of the cultural and artistic roots behind today's K-culture. On the lineup are media art pieces built around Nam June Paik, the pioneer of global video art, and Yoo Youngkuk, who opened new ground for Korean abstract painting. "Cheonggu Yeongeon," a landmark collection of Korean-language poetry that recorded everyday feeling and life, will also be reimagined as contemporary media art. A new work combining laser and lighting design rounds out the program.

Before the public opening, the foundation is holding a press conference and on-site press program at 5 p.m. KST on September 3. Reporters will hear directly from the Nam June Paik Art Center and from participating artists including Kwon Hayoun, TWOGRAY and Yoon Jeh-oh about the concepts and production behind the works.

The opening ceremony follows the same evening. It includes a launch performance that pairs laser design with dance, a media facade sequence built on Nam June Paik, Yoo Youngkuk and "Cheonggu Yeongeon," and a special live set from Korean electronic band IDIOTAPE.

Seoul Light DDP has become one of the city's signature cultural events. The festival has taken prizes at all three of the world's major design awards, iF, Red Dot and IDEA, for four years in a row. It also holds a Guinness World Record for the largest 3D projection mapping display on an irregular architectural structure.

The full schedule on Sept. 3 runs from 5 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. KST at DDP's Design Lab and the surrounding Eoullim Plaza. The program moves from the press conference and artist interviews through dinner and networking, the opening ceremony at 7 p.m. KST, the laser-and-dance opening performance, the media facade viewing, and IDIOTAPE's closing performance.

More than a light show, the festival frames Seoul's night skyline as a stage for the ideas at the roots of K-culture. By pulling a video art pioneer, an abstract painter and a centuries-old Korean poetry collection into the same visual language, "K-Original Light" argues that the current wave of Korean pop culture did not start from nothing. It started here.
