It's A2O, Not A20: 7 in 10 Searchers Get Lee Soo-man’s New Girl Group Name Wrong
Most people searching for rookie girl group A2O LITE are typing the wrong name. On Naver, South Korea's leading search portal, 75% of searches use "A20," with the number 20, instead of the group's official name, "A2O." On YouTube, the figure rises to 78%.
The group's name comes from "Alpha to Omega," representing the beginning and the end. However, the letter O at the end is easy to mistake for a zero. As a result, that small detail has made "A20" more widely known than the group's actual name.
The figures come from search data obtained on Oct. 21. They show how only 3 out of 10 people are searching for the group by its correct name.
Google Trends showed a similar pattern. When "A2O" and "A20" were each checked on Oct. 21, the wrong name came out ahead.
The gap was the clearest on Oct. 15. That day, A2O LITE reached No. 1 on the Top 100, the main chart on the Korean streaming platform Melon, just 29 hours after its debut.
On Google Trends in South Korea, "A20" scored a perfect 100 that day. That made Oct. 15 the day of highest interest between the group's debut on Oct. 13 and Oct. 21. The correct name, "A2O," scored only 53, about half of that.
The pattern held worldwide. On Oct. 15, "A20" scored 100, while the official "A2O" scored 74.
The group's agency, A2O Entertainment, is reportedly considering ways to help the public recognize and correctly spell the group's name.
The mix-up has also fueled debate over a rumor. Some had speculated that the agency was running a viral marketing campaign to promote the group. However, the search data works strongly against that idea, since no company would run a viral campaign under the wrong name.
Many people found A2O LITE's music show clips and other videos by searching "A20." This could suggest that interest in the group is spreading through word of mouth, rather than a promotional campaign by the agency.
For a new group, a misread letter is an odd problem to have. But it also shows that people went looking for A2O LITE on their own, even when they got the name wrong.
