BTS Cancels "IDOL" Stadium Walk in São Paulo, Sparking Fan Backlash
BTS's long-awaited return to Brazil was met with another unexpected change on October 28, as the group did not perform its usual stadium walk during "IDOL" at the first of three sold-out "ARIRANG" world tour concerts in São Paulo.
Approximately 15 minutes before the performance began at MorumBIS Stadium, an announcement informed attendees that the seven members would not move through the lower stadium area during the song, unlike at previous stops on the tour.
Instead, "IDOL" would be performed entirely on stage, removing one of the concert's most anticipated opportunities for fans to see the members up close.
The announcement quickly circulated across social media, where some attendees expressed disappointment over the last-minute change and raised concerns about crowding in the stadium's floor section.
Other posts alleged that the floor had become too crowded to accommodate the members' movement through the audience, with some fans questioning whether ticket sales and seating arrangements had contributed to the situation.
However, claims that more tickets were sold than the venue could safely accommodate have not been independently verified, and no official explanation establishing overselling has been confirmed.
The change was particularly disappointing for fans who had anticipated the stadium walk after seeing the members interact with audiences during "IDOL" at earlier tour stops.
One social media user criticized Live Nation, accusing the promoter of prioritizing profit over the concert experience and expressing frustration over reports of ticket holders being relocated to the floor. However, the allegations concerning ticket reallocations and the promoter's motives remain unverified.
While some fans criticized the decision, others acknowledged that avoiding the stadium walk would be appropriate if crowd conditions presented a safety risk.
The situation comes amid heightened scrutiny of the production and organization of BTS's South American concerts. Earlier this month, fans raised concerns over the reduction of the tour's LED screens from 12 in other regions to four across the South American leg.
The controversy subsequently reached Brazilian consumer protection authorities, with the National Consumer Secretariat requesting explanations from Live Nation and Ticketmaster about the production differences and the information provided to ticket buyers. São Paulo's consumer protection agency, Procon-SP, also reported receiving 518 complaints related to the concerts, including 460 concerning the performance structure.
The latest change also follows crowd safety concerns during BTS's October 21 concert in Argentina, when the group temporarily stopped its performance after dangerous crowding developed near the stage barriers.
That incident highlighted the importance of maintaining safe conditions for both performers and attendees, particularly during moments involving close interaction between artists and large audiences.
In São Paulo, the decision to keep BTS on stage during "IDOL" may have reduced potential risks associated with movement through a crowded floor section, although the organizers have not publicly detailed the circumstances behind the adjustment.
The group's return to Brazil remains a significant moment for local ARMYs, marking BTS's first performances in the country in seven years. All three concerts at MorumBIS Stadium, scheduled for October 28, 30 and 31, sold out, reflecting the strong demand for the group's return.
However, the removal of the stadium walk has added another point of frustration for some fans already questioning aspects of the South American tour's production.
While safety must remain a priority, the late announcement has also renewed questions about how changes to major concert productions are communicated to audiences who have already paid to attend.
