K-POP Fan Power Dominates 2026 AMAs as BTS Takes Top Honor
The 2026 American Music Awards (AMAs) sparked widespread reactions after K-POP artists and K-POP-related projects emerged as some of the night's biggest winners, leading many viewers to joke that the ceremony had effectively become "a K-POP award show."
Often regarded as one of the biggest mainstream music award ceremonies in the United States alongside the Grammys and Billboard Music Awards, the AMAs have long been considered a major indicator of public popularity and fan engagement in the American music market.
BTS took home both "Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Summer," standing out in one of the most competitive lineups of the night. The group beat nominees including Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars to secure the ceremony's top award.
K-POP artists also maintained a strong presence throughout the ceremony. KATSEYE picked up major wins, including "New Artist of the Year," "Breakthrough Pop Artist," and "Best Music Video," continuing its rapid rise less than two years after its debut.
The group has quickly built a strong global fandom through international promotions and performances, further highlighting K-POP's growing influence within the global pop market. Meanwhile, TWICE won "Best Female K-POP Artist" while actively continuing its large-scale world tour.
KPop Demon Hunters also emerged as one of the night's standout winners after taking home "Best Soundtrack," highlighting the growing reach of K-POP-related intellectual properties within the global entertainment industry. HUNTR/X's "Golden," performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, also swept "Song of the Year," "Best Pop Song" and "Best Vocal Performance."
The AMAs' voting structure was one of the biggest reasons behind the strong dominance of K-pop artists among this year's winners. Unlike some major American music awards that rely heavily on chart performance or industry voting panels, the AMAs determine winners entirely through fan voting. While nominees are initially selected using metrics such as streaming numbers, album sales and social engagement, the final trophies are awarded solely through public vote.
That structure has favored highly organized fandoms, an area where K-POP fans have consistently demonstrated exceptional mobilization power on a global scale. Across social media platforms, K-POP fandoms frequently coordinate mass voting campaigns, share detailed voting guides in multiple languages and organize around-the-clock participation efforts across different time zones. This level of organization has become one of the defining characteristics of modern K-POP fandom culture.
BTS has previously shown similar dominance in fan-voted categories. The group maintained a strong winning streak at the Billboard Music Awards for years, particularly in the "Top Social Artist" category, which factored in streaming activity, social media engagement and online fan voting. BTS won the award five consecutive times from 2017 to 2021 before Billboard retired the category.
Notably, BTS has continued to win major AMAs even during its military hiatus. In 2022, the group won both "Favorite Pop Duo or Group" and the newly introduced "Favorite K-POP Artist" categories. In 2025, member RM also secured "Favorite K-POP Artist" as a solo act.
The latest AMA results have further fueled discussion about how fandom culture is reshaping the global music industry. Some online reactions noted that even the biggest mainstream American artists may struggle in direct fan-vote competitions against K-pop fandoms, which are known for highly coordinated voting campaigns, massive international participation and exceptional mobilization power. The results once again highlighted the growing influence of K-pop's fandom-driven culture on the global music scene.
