Director Cody Critcheloe wanted "ICONIC BY MISTAKE" to look nothing like a typical K-POP music video. In a Weverse Magazine interview published Wednesday, the director described the project as a deliberate attempt to twist and overturn the genre's visual conventions.

"I wanted to step away from conventional standards of beauty," Critcheloe said.

The video pulls LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT and KATSEYE into a shared world that runs through graveyards, a dental office and a field set on fire. These are settings rarely seen in mainstream K-POP visuals, and that was the point. Critcheloe said he wanted to keep the depth of story that K-POP fans are used to reading into, while changing the visual language used to tell it.

He pointed to the storytelling layer as one of K-POP's real strengths. Fans, he said, are used to interpreting meaning on their own, and he wanted to protect that space while pushing the imagery somewhere less familiar.

The police figures who appear throughout the video, according to Critcheloe, are a broad metaphor for the entertainment industry itself, with its constant cycle of evaluation and judgment. What mattered to him was that the artists never lose control of the frame, even when they are being watched.

LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT and KATSEYE are shown as figures who hold their ground under that gaze. "In the end, the artists are the ones driving the situation in the video," Critcheloe said. He added that mistakes, accidents and imperfections can be exactly the things that turn someone into an icon, a line that ties directly back to the song's title.

Each group's own story gets folded into the larger one. LE SSERAFIM's gravestone scene, ILLIT's wisdom tooth motif and KATSEYE's stage and flames are all symbols fans already know from earlier work, but here they take on new meaning inside a single connected narrative. "I wanted to build a world where each group could keep its identity but still exist together inside a bigger story," Critcheloe said.

The video closes with all three groups together. The members roast marshmallows in front of a fire and play guitar. Critcheloe called the scene "surprisingly simple, lovable and a little ridiculous," and said it was meant to capture the feeling of being connected and going through something together.

"ICONIC BY MISTAKE" has been performing well on global charts since its release. The music video hit No. 1 on YouTube's Music Videos Trending Worldwide chart shortly after release and has passed 29 million views. A dance practice video released on June 14 also took the No. 1 spot on the same chart. The track ranked No. 25 on Spotify's Daily Top Songs Global chart dated June 16.
