Why 'ICONIC BY MISTAKE' Stands Out Among K-POP's In-House Collaborations

Collaborations between artists under the same company have long been part of K-POP. But "ICONIC BY MISTAKE," the special single by LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT and KATSEYE, has managed to stand out in a way that few in-house projects have.

More than four weeks after its release, the song continues to gain traction rather than fading after its initial buzz. It has spent three consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 while maintaining a steady presence on global charts, suggesting it has become more than a one-off collaboration.

K-POP companies have experimented with in-house collaborations for years. SM Entertainment introduced project groups such as GOT the beat, which brought together BoA and members of Girls' Generation, Red Velvet and aespa, and SuperM, featuring members of SHINee, EXO, NCT 127 and WayV. HYBE has also paired artists across its labels through collaborations such as BTS' j-hope with LE SSERAFIM's Huh Yunjin and TXT's Yeonjun with KATSEYE's Daniela. However, most of these projects have been feature tracks, temporary units or promotional collaborations.

"ICONIC BY MISTAKE" took a different approach. Rather than stopping at the song itself, LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT and KATSEYE rolled out a broader project spanning performances, original content, merchandise and fan-platform events, giving fans multiple ways to engage with the collaboration.

That strategy helped sustain interest. A joint dance practice video highlighted the three groups' chemistry, while the original series "MY SISTERHOODIE" offered a more casual look at the members as they customized hoodies for one another. Official merchandise, including a keyring inspired by the pigeon featured in the music video, further reinforced the collaboration's identity.

The project also stood out behind the scenes. HYBE divided production responsibilities across its labels, with BELIFT LAB overseeing performance, SOURCE MUSIC leading the visual creative direction and HYBE x Geffen handling A&R. Instead of relying on a single production team, the release combined the strengths of multiple creative groups. Fans also pointed to the contrast in each group's performance style and vocal color as one of the collaboration's biggest draws, with many enjoying how the members interpreted the same choreography while maintaining their own identities.

The collaboration's impact extended beyond streaming numbers. Following the single's release, KATSEYE climbed 49 places to No. 63 on Spotify's Weekly Top Artists Global chart. LE SSERAFIM re-entered at No. 110, while ILLIT debuted at No. 121. Combined Weverse community memberships for the three groups also increased 12.7 percent, with the number of users joining all three communities rising 5.23 percent.

Fans largely embraced the project for its unexpected pairing of artists. Many praised how LE SSERAFIM's powerful performance style, ILLIT's fresh image and KATSEYE's global energy complemented one another, while others highlighted the song's confident message and themes of sisterhood. The steady stream of accompanying content also encouraged fans from different fandoms to engage with the project together.

Ultimately, the success of "ICONIC BY MISTAKE" lies not simply in bringing three groups together, but in how that collaboration was presented. Instead of treating it as a short-term promotional event, HYBE developed it into a multi-platform project that gave fans reasons to stay invested well beyond the song itself.
