Too Noisy? ILLIT Tops Music Show Charts Despite Whistle Backlash
K-pop group ILLIT has won its first music show trophy since its latest comeback. The group took first place on KBS2's "Music Bank" on Nov. 6 with "You're Under Arrest" (Chepohagesseo), the title track of its fifth EP, "BREAK EVEN."
On the "Music Bank" stage, ILLIT wore a range of outfits inspired by the song's whistle concept. The members dressed as lifeguards, cheerleaders and sports referees, performing synchronized choreography and singing live to the song's upbeat rhythm.
"We sincerely thank everyone at our agency and the staff who have worked so hard by our side," the group said after the win. "We also want to thank Moka, who gave us so much support while we were preparing the album."
"Most of all, we believe we were able to win this precious first place thanks to GLLIT," the members added, referring to their fandom. "We'll keep working hard to capture GLLIT's hearts."
The song drew mixed reactions before its official release. ILLIT first performed "You're Under Arrest" at its encore concerts on Oct. 17 and 18. Videos filmed by concertgoers later spread online.
Some viewers complained that the whistle sound was too loud and grating, while others felt the song itself lacked polish. In the concert clips, the repeated whistle stood out while the lyrics were difficult to make out, leading to further criticism online.
However, the song's chart performance told a different story after its official release. As of Nov. 5, "You're Under Arrest" had held No. 1 for five consecutive days on Apple Music's "Top 100: South Korea" chart. It also ranked high on major South Korean music charts, including Melon's Top 100, Bugs and Genie.
The song also entered international charts. It appeared on Spotify's Daily Top Songs Global chart shortly after release and entered Billboard's Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts dated Nov. 7.
The album also set a new sales record for ILLIT. According to Hanteo Chart, "BREAK EVEN" sold 444,072 copies in its first week, surpassing the group's previous first-week record of 411,654 copies by 32,418 copies. Despite the mixed reactions before the comeback, the song performed well on music charts while the album achieved the group's highest first-week sales to date.
The track has also gained traction on short-form video platforms. As of Nov. 6, more than 400,000 TikTok videos had used "You're Under Arrest," including videos using its original sound. The song reached No. 1 on TikTok's Top 50 chart and No. 3 on its Viral 50 chart. As of Nov. 4, it had also entered YouTube's Daily Top Shorts Songs charts in several countries, including South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.
ILLIT released "You're Under Arrest (Remixes)" on Nov. 6. The release includes Kids, Whistle, Club and Hyper remixes, each offering a different take on the original track.
